Hawaiian Vacation: Do I Need to Rent a Car?

Heidi with her daughter at Aulani!

This past Thanksgiving my family had the opportunity to stay at Disney's Aulani Resort and Spa at Ko'Olina on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. We had an unbelievable time! The resort is gorgeous, our view from our room couldn't be beat. We enjoyed the fine dining and casual dining that Aulani offered and of course we couldn't get enough of the pool and beach areas BUT, we did feel secluded. There are very few restaurants in the Ko'Olina area (Roy's restaurant, a convenience store and a mexican restaurant are the only other options) and the closest shopping area is about a 20 minutes drive away (Target is probably the closest).

Disney's Aulani Resort and Spa offers top notch activities, recreation and dining but since we didn't know when we would make it back to Oahu, we wanted to make sure and see all the sites that this island has to offer. We loved the flexibility of getting in our car and venturing out. We enjoyed some fun day trips to Pearl Harbor, Dole Plantation, North Shore, Diamond Head and Waikiki (stop at Leonard's Bakery for some yummy malasadas!). I couldn't imagine not having our own rental car. Although parking at Aulani is pricey, we still found it so much more convenient to drive when and where we wanted instead of relying on scheduled transportation.

When visiting Disney's Aulani Resort and Spa or any other Hawaiian island resort, I highly recommend renting your own car. When you book with us, we can assist you with adding on a car rental too!
